Mimicries

for violin, trombone, electric cymbalum and tape__8'__2014

PROGRAM NOTE

"Mimicries" was composed during the Gaudeamus-Montreal week in April 2014 in collaboration with the members of 7090. The goal of the Leftovers project was to create pieces from participating composers' discarded sketches.

Usually when I brainstorm or explore material for a composition, I like to vocalize and record musical ideas – more so than to sketch directly on paper. Therefore what I had to contribute as "leftovers" were recorded vocal improvisations I had accumulated in the past year. By submitting these audio sketches, I wanted us to approach music through sound, rather than through sight (musical notation).

We selected three short vocal improvisations, and the piece was built from the trio member's attempts to imitate them as closely as they could, mimicking the pitch content, morphology, texture and character of the sound.
