PROGRAM NOTE

"Notre meute" (Our Pack) is an ethnographic fiction evoking the music and manners of an invented population, whose origins are geographically and temporally unknown. Apparently singing, other times talking, sometimes wailing, other times stammering, our tribe or "our pack" is positioned ambiguously in the spectrum that ranges from the primitive to the civilized, from the savage to the sophisticated.

With the work of Gadenstätter, and further with that of Dharmoo, the vocal soloists balanced with typical sovereignty upon a tightrope of contemporary vocal-techniques. With great refinement Dharmoo concocted a sound-portrait of a fictitious aboriginal-people drawn out of in one instant, panting, gasping, nearly animalistic sounds, at other times sounds of a near-renaissance uprightness set beside the unabashedly folkloristic. The primitive appeared crafted, the crafted naïve – the civilized and the untamed exchanged as effortlessly as notions of 'high-art' and 'traditional-craft' – all told with a sense of humour and of sensuality.

But it was Gabriel Dharmoo that really stood out. Diversely murmured, passingly comprehensible vocal gestures barely to grasped, as words exchanged with pentatonic and quasi-traditional melodies - markedly amusing, performed as if it were tailor-made for ensemble itself.

Lorsque le ténor débute la pièce avec une sorte de jappement- grognement, la salle sera immédiatement conquise. Dans un véritable concert des nations, Notre meute sollicite des rythmes africains, des mélodies orientales, des sonorités brésiliennes dans un remix ludique auquel les chanteurs semblent avoir pris un réel plaisir. Une sorte de mash-up pour intellectuels avertis. Dharmoo peut se targuer d'avoir été très bien servi, et le public montréalais a pu constater toute l'ampleur que peuvent prendre ses œuvres. Notre meute n'avait rien à envier à ce qui avait précédé et à ce qui allait suivre [Aperghis, Vivier, Stockhausen]. Le jeune compositeur ne reniera certainement pas l'influence de Claude Vivier dans son œuvre, quoique j'aie senti dans cette nouvelle pièce un tournant vers une voix plus personnelle et plus assumée que jamais.
